Datachain Web Based Training

Today's world is increasingly being driven by the need for easy access to accurate information. Aeronautical Information must be available quickly and its accuracy maintained for obvious safety reason.

All along the Aeronautical Data Chain, data is exchanged between various actors. At each data exchange point, information has to be transmitted between two or more actors. In the previous paper-based system, a piece of data was published in multiple formats that were then integrated and interpreted to provide data sets corresponding to the needs of dierent users.
In a paper-based (manual) environment, there is a risk of loss of data consistency and integrity at each exchange and integration point. This may compromise safety and cannot be accepted. Moreover, latest and future navigation applications for example rely on aeronautical information with high integrity levels. The way to improve the situation is to evolve to a fully digital data environment.

The objective of the DATA CHAIN team at Eurocontrol is to improve the accuracy and quality of the originated aeronautical data and its management from the information source to the publication and, to subsequently enable enhanced processing throughout the entire aeronautical data chain.

Project Objectives

Pulsar Consulting was in charge of developing an web based training (CBT) to provide a detailed reference guide for the metadata labeled “critical” and “essential” inside the Aeronautical Data Chain. The target audiences for this CBT are all persons involved with the Aeronautical Data Chain.

Application Scope

The learning material was originally very structured and we decided to respect the initial ordering of the various elements that compose this material. This structure consist of a sensible backbone on top of which the course is built. We divided the training into 3 modules: Introduction, “Essential Data” and “Critical Data”.
“Essential Data” and “Critical Data” being the main functionalities of the application. All modules propose a large variety of illustrations and animations in order to make the learning quicker and more enjoyable. The course is based on simple HTML pages and can also be viewed offline if desired.

Main Concepts

Aeronautical Data Integrity: Eurocontrol’s contracting States have the responsibility to ensure that the integrity of aeronautical data is maintained throughout the data process from the survey to the distribution.

Critical Data: when there is a high probability when using corrupted critical data that the continued safe flight and landing of an aircraft would be severely at risk with the potential for catastrophe.

Essential Data: when there is a low probability when using corrupted essential data that the continued safe flight and landing of an aircraft would be severely at risk with the potential for catastrophe.

Routine Data: when there is a very low probability when using corrupted routine data that the continued safe flight and landing of an aircraft would be severely at risk with the potential for catastrophe.
